"The Old Schenectady" by Howard Ackers was written in 1955. This treatment of the march by Mr. Parthun uses the same primary melodies that Mr. Akers wrote for each strain and the original bass line. The woodwind harmony lines in the first strain and the quotes from "Hail Purdue" in the trio are new additions to the piece. The orchestration reflects the instrumentation used in contemporary junior high and high school bands. The trio has been completely re-voiced to display some interesting woodwind colors and has enough doubling of sax and double reed parts that most bands will be able to perform it. |
