Grade 2 |
"Checkpoint Charlie" is a programmatic composition depicting an era in Berlin when political and ideological forces were entrenched in a battle of wills. The desire for freedom all too often led to deadly consequences. The somber opening of "Checkpoint Charlie" serves as a reminder of the dark days of a divided city. The ensuing dissonant fast section depicts the discord between rival armies. The piece is written in 3/4 and during the fast section there are several measures that should be conducted in 2 (6/8). Pay particular attention to articulations and dynamics. Students will enjoy rehearsing and performing "Checkpoint Charlie".
