Afternoon Clouds - Clarinet Quartet

Jeffrey T. Parthum, Sr.

Level 2

Imagine looking up at a relaxing afternoon sky.  Wispy cloud formations float by that continually transform into new and interesting shapes before moving out of sight over the horizon.  This is the musical journey that Afternoon Clouds takes both listener and performer.    With playable solo passages, contrapuntal lines and tempo changes, this imaginative piece is an excellent addition to educational clarinet ensemble literature.

 Performance Notes

This piece is written with the half note getting the beat throughout.  The piece can certainly be learned in 4 and 6, especially when working out the interplay between the lines, but eventually it will feel much more relaxed in 2 and 3.  Clarinet 1 and Clarinet 2 go over the break while Clarinet 3 and Bass Clarinet stay entirely below the break.  The piece is diatonic until the last section where most parts encounter common accidentals.
