An excellent contest or concert piece, 1218 Overture is a clever work that demonstrates a musical play-on-words. With quotes from the famous 1812 Overture, this piece helps students see how a composer can create an entire composition from a simple 4-note idea, 1-2-1-8. This grade 1.5 piece, written in concert Bb and Eb major in different styles and time signatures, stays within an octave in most parts. The primary clarinet part stays below the break but an optional advanced clarinet part is included that goes over the break. Percussion parts are interesting and feature an easy xylophone solo part.
