Siyahamba

Jerry Frazier

Grade 1.5

Siyahamba is a South African folk song originally in the Zulu language.  The title means "We are marching," and in the vocal versions, the first line in English is "We are marching in the light of God."
Some interesting rhythms occur, and the melody and countermelody are passed around so that everyone has exciting parts.  Ranges are moderate as are the rhythms.  This lively song will have the audience tapping and clapping. Enjoy preparing and performing Siyahamba.

Amazing piece! It has something exciting for each instrument to attach to. Rhythms that may be new to an ensemble are easy to implement, a good opportunity to feature strong musicians. I was very pleased with this piece, with my second year group.

A great arrangement of a catchy Zulu folk tune. My 6th graders love playing this song, and because of that they are catching on to the syncopations in the tune. Makes it easy to teach and easy to learn.
