The beginning of "A Patriot Salute" features an original melody portraying strength and great importance in honor of those who have served in the Armed Forces. The second portion of the piece is "America" (My Country tis of Thee). Using only 6 notes the opening movement uses unique harmonic movement which belies a far more mature band. "America" does use a dotted rhythm and the 1st Clarinet briefly crosses the break.
